From Woodcote onwards, though, it was clear he had a job on his hands to stay in front as his big Ford squirmed under braking and struggled to get its power down. That he managed to hang on for the best part of a lap was commendable, the Fairlane had all the grace of a lumberjack on banana skins as the chasing Jaguar Mk1s maintained elegant power slides.
The Mk1s, Chris Ward’s Jag and James Dorlin’s Lister, were enjoying a surplus of grip in comparison to the big V8 blunderbuss, and it was no surprise that those two were soon off into the distance and repairing to engage in a battle for victory.
Nick Swift, meanwhile, who had struggled for outright pace in his Austin Mini during Part 1, had suddenly come alive in these low-grip conditions, and looked to be having an awful lot of fun in a situation he excels, chomping at the heels of V8-engined behemoths. Fred Shepherd’s Ford Thunderbird was his early source of entertainment, and he easily dispatched the big brute around the outside of Lavant.
As Grant Williams began to close onto the tail of the leading duo, the battle for the win promised to turn into a three-way battle. He, Dorlin and Ward remained within touching distance for the majority, and with a handful of minutes still to go it was anyone’s guess who would end up as the victor. Enjoy the full race from start to finish to see who came out on top.
