Things kick off with Bruno Senna driving the Lotus 97T in which his uncle, in which the late great Ayrton Senna, scored his first ever Formula 1 Grand Prix win. Seeing a Senna wearing that yellow helmet in a Lotus with that JPS livery was a real goosebumps moment.
Our first bit of race action comes courtesy of Frank Stippler aboard the Ferrari Dino 206S in the Gurney Cup. He went from not fancying his chances on the Friday before the event, to guiding the little red sportscar from last to first just 24 hours later. It will go down in Goodwood lore as one of the all-time great drives.
Other in-race battles include Jake Hill and Andy Priaulx having a door-to-door ding-dong in the Gordon Spice Trophy. Hill was driving a Ford Capri and Priaulx was hassling him every inch of the way with a Chevrolet Camaro.
Just as hotly contested was the final lap of the Hailwood Trophy, Dan Jackson (Yamaha TZ350) and Michael Russell (Triumph Trident) exchanging places on the final lap to decide the winner. While over in the Whitmore Cup, Guy Smith demonstrated the ultimate pace of a Lotus Cortina.
Rob Huff and André Lotterer were locked into a close-run battle for first place in the Gurney Cup until Frank Stippler came to take their lunch in the Dino 206S. Nevertheless, they remained battling closely for second place in the two-way Ford GT40 scrap.
Demonstrations also provided some of our favourite moments of the day. The all-new Jota Cadillac hypercar made its UK debut, while the GMA T.50s sounded like a 1990s Formula 1 car with its five-figure rpm. Finally, our gathering of GT3 cars ahead of the Shoot-Out provided a terrific spectacle of modern race cars around this historic Goodwood Motor Circuit. The Aston Martin Vantage provided possibly the best livery (and best sound), touring car ace Andy Jordan took the Corvette on a charge, while Frank Stippler set the pace in the Chevrolet Camaro.
