Singer has given the 911 Carrera Coupe whale tail and a 8,000rpm redline

The Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe Reimagined by Singer tips its hat to the G 911 Carrera that was badged the Carrera with Super Sport Equipment in 1988.

While the 'Carrera' name is usually associated with the bog standard model in the range, the Super Sport Equipment was far more focused. Featuring the pumped-body body of the Turbo – and its whale tail rear spoiler – matched to the company's finest naturally aspirated flat-six, Porsche said the Super Sport Equipment was built for the 'connoisseur of high performance'. It was the ultimate expression of a naturally aspirated G model 911.

Power for the new car comes from a rambunctious 964-based 4.0-litre flat-six developing 426PS (313kW) co-developed by Cosworth with four valves per cylinder and air-cooled cylinders. It's also the first time variable valve timing has been deployed in a Singer 'for more lowdown urge and top-end surge' and the first time a naturally aspirated Singer engine has a water-cooled head that allows it to do it.

Expect a soundtrack worth mounting a single-handed assault on Fort Knox's millions as the Singer races towards a redline of more than 8,000rpm. An optimised, six-speed, manual gearbox with a raised gear shifter and an exposed shift mechanism makes you the conductor of the best titanium-exhausted orchestra in town.

Singer calls it a 'big hearted' sports car, a tamer, slightly less full-one and more usable experience than the intensity-brimmed Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer DLS – the car developed by Williams that develops 506 PS (372kW) at more than 9,000rpm.

Like the DLS, the Super Sport Equipment tribute is based on a 964 chassis stripped to the bare metal and strengthened with help from Red Bull Advanced Technologies. Red Bull's simulations and structural analysis developed steel and composite reinforcement, making this 964-based car much closer to a modern Porsche for rigidity.

And that's not the only thing. The entire body is made from lightweight carbon fibre, making the chassis even stronger and giving the Porsche-inspired machine a look that makes dialysis a favourable alternative to a pair of working kidneys. The deep front spoiler flows into achingly beautiful wheelarches with generous vent-age ahead of the rear wheels sending cooling air to the engine. Pop-up high-performance auxiliary lights are a must-tick option from an equipment list that can be almost entirely bespoke.

The big question is whether to whale or not to whale tail. There's something deeply seductive about the quiet confidence of the speed-activated mini ducktail. Still, it's hard to imagine buying this car without specifying the whale tail that gives its seething flamboyance. Or you can have both with a bespoke flight case to carry them in.

Underneath, Singer's turbocharged services provide the foundation for the car's 'compliant, sporting handling' with four-way adjustable dampers featuring an electronic damping control that can be operated from the driver's seat and includes a nose lift. Carbon ceramic brakes do the stopping via 18-inch center-lock wheels on Michelin Pilot Sport rubber. ABS, adjustable traction and stability control are 'get out of jail free' cards you didn't get in the old model G.

The finishing touch comes in 18-inch Fuch-like centre-locking white alloy wheels wrapped in Michelin Pilot Sport tyres and hiding carbon ceramic brakes developed through the DLS services. The cars here are customer builds demonstrating the bandwidth of customisation.

This Singer's interior is as inviting as any of its forebears (so very), with leather on every surface, analogue dials and a raised exposed gear shifter mechanism as a centrepiece. The retro oozing Mars Pink you see here would be incredibly hard to resist. But your Singer can be how you want it and buried deep in the nostalgia, you'll find modern air-conditioning and an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay.

It's hard not to see the Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe Reimagined by Singer as the pick of the range. A car that combines cool-dripping looks with a naturally aspirated rev range to savour, modern handling and tech, with a gorgeous cabin fitted with the latest infotainment.

Just 100 examples of the Porsche 911 Carrera Coupe Reimagined by Singer will be built, but even with a price of well over £1million, expect them to sell quickly.
