As well as hosting Formula 1 at the weekend, Miami was also the home of Bonhams|Cars' most recent auction, and it was the ‘modern classic’ era that brought in the best results. A 1990 Porsche 911 Turbo reimagined by Singer attracted the highest bid, closely followed by a 1994 Bugatti EB110. Here’s a run-down of the top five results.
Sold for $1,680,000 including premium
The appeal of high end restomods shows no signs of abating. Singer is the best known creator of ‘reimagined’ Porsche 911s, taking 964s and simultaneously back-dating them and paying attention to every detail. ‘The Sun Valley Commission’, complete with a twin-turbocharged 3.8-litre Mezger engine, was offered with just 267 miles on the clock. It was therefore essentially new and presented an opportunity to skip the Singer waiting list. It comfortably lived up to its seven-figure estimate.
Sold for $1,375,000 including premium
Before the Veyron came the Bugatti EB110. It was the car that rekindled the moribund marque when development began in 1987 to become the first new Bugatti since the 1950s. Development was initiated by engineer Paolo Stanzani and stylist Marcello Gandini, who had previously worked together to create the Lamborghini Countach, but both men left the project before its completion. The car sold by Bonhams|Cars was one of an estimated 84 GT models. It was said to retain its original V12 engine, as well as the rare toolkit and original radio, and had covered 30,490km.
Sold for $828,800
We dip into six figures with this next result. The Ford GT Carbon Edition is no less eye-catching than the EB110, especially in its striking orange paint coming as part of The Orange Collection. The paint was a $25,000 Exclusive Color Pallette option that meant it couldn’t be specified on any other GT. The Carbon Series extras included exposed carbon fibre stripes, as well as wheels, sills and other details, all contrasting with a businesslike black interior. It was consigned with 4,092 miles on the clock, the 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6 engine having been barely run-in.
Sold for $722,400 including premium
Hot on the Carbon Edition’s heels is this track-only variant of the new-era Ford GT. The MkII was first shown at the Goodwood Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard in 2019, and this example is number 44 of the 45 built. It was delivered to its first owner in 2023 having been commissioned in December 2021, though despite the model’s track-going intention it was presented with just 40 miles on the clock, having not turned a wheel on a circuit. Will the new owner tarnish its box-fresh condition by taking it trackside for the first time? Or will it continue to be preserved in its as-new condition?
Sold for $425,600 including premium
The next car from The Orange Collection is this Plymouth ‘Hemi’ Superbird, the wild NASCAR homologation special with its statement rear wing. Only 135 ‘R-Code’ Hemi-powered Superbirds were built, denoting its 426 cubic-inch V8 engine. The paint colour is known as Hi-Impact Vitamin C and contrasts against the white seats and door cards. It’s hard to think of a more suitably ’70s colour scheme. Detailed accompanying paperwork confirmed the car’s originality and its December 1969 build date.
Sold for $403,200 including premium
Ferrari built 559 examples of the 575 Superamerica, its flip-top hardtop offering open-air motoring to emphasise the V12 soundtrack. There aren’t too many modern Ferraris that combine that cylinder count with an open roof, which makes the Superamerica popular among collectors. This example is finished in classic Rosso Corsa over tan and has had just two owners. Recent servicing boosted its appeal, as did the modest 3,267 miles on the clock.
