Any visitors to Goodwoof this weekend who are looking for a new set of wheels with which to transport their pooches will be able to get up close with two new Land Rover Discovery editions. The Tempest and Gemini variants bring new colours and equipment to the established Land Rover model line.
Land Rover says the Tempest is the most luxurious, highly specified and comfortable Discovery to date, something that may be lost on a labrador travelling in the back. The Tempest is easily identified by its choice of three colours – Charente Grey, Varesine Blue or Carpathian Grey – each coated in matte protective film for a distinctively unshiny finish. Whatever body colour you choose, it will be contrasted with a Petra Copper Gloss roof, unless you opt for Narvik Gloss Black.
The copper colour is repeated for the wing vent, Discovery script and lower bumper inserts. You can also play a game of sport the spirals, the Tempest logo appearing inside and out. Talking of the interior, Shadow aluminium detailing features alongside Ebony Windsor leather upholstery. Perfect for a terrier to relax.
The Gemini takes its name from the codename of the Tdi engine that powered the original Discovery in 1989. There are six exterior colours to choose from, including Sedona Red for the first time on a Discovery. Here, it’s shiny and contrasted by Gloss Black detailing for the roof, lower body cladding, grille and front wing vents. It’s denoted by a twin hexagonal logo.
There’s no 1989 Gemini engine, though. This model shares its 3.0-litre D350 diesel engine with the Tempest, the mild hybrid being good for 350PS (257kW) and 700Nm (516lb ft) of torque. It can tow up to 3,500kg, so won’t have any trouble lugging a Newfoundland to a walk in the woods.
There are also three curated accessory packs suited to beach days, road trips and snow days. They follow the established Discovery accessory packs named Biking Adventure and For Dogs, the latter providing our four-legged friends with a foldable pet carrier, portable rinse system and a spill-resistant water bowl.
A few new tricks, then, for the 36-year-old model line.
