Sitting in the De Tomaso at full chat sounds like being locked in the engine bay of a Lamborghini Aventador, its V12 producing a heavy metal roar that morphs into a cultured scream as the revs (very) rapidly rise. The P72's sequential gearbox acts as the conductor laboured at first, but its changes soon chime in with the tremendous speed requested by De Tomaso's glorious motor. Props go to the driver who takes the De Tomaso by the stuff of its neck up – and at points off – Belgium's famed F1 circuit.
By the looks of his white knuckles, our passenger isn't getting much time to enjoy the P72's wonderful interior with its beautifully exposed analogue dials and a fervent disregard for infotainment screens.
Slightly putting a damper on things is the news that the production P72 – out soon – will have a supercharged Ford V8 and a conventional H-pattern gearbox that won't be up to the orchestral sound output of this prototype. It's set to cost around £650,000.
