Today's video of the full Moss Trophy from the 72nd Members Meeting is made even more special by the appearance of two rare ‘Breadvans’ – the Lotus 11 GT and the Ferrari 250 GT SWB. But if you think either car will be handled with kids' gloves, then you'd be wrong; the race gets underway, with a barrage of smoke and tail slides, and the Ferrari takes the lead.
The Ferrari ‘Breadvan’ was a product of circumstance, only built because Enzo Ferrari wouldn't sell its owner, Count Giovanni Volpi, a new GTO. Volpi, who had incensed old man Ferrari by hiring valuable Ferrari employees, needed a car to compete with the GTOs he was blacklisted from buying, and the ‘Breadvan’ was the result.
The Ferrari performed so well in racing that it inspired Graham Capel to give his Lotus 11 the same treatment in 1964 and now you can watch both cars race here as we excitedly await this weekend’s running of the Moss Trophy.
The 82nd Members' Meeting will take place on 12th and 13th April 2025 and tickets are now available for Members and Fellows of the GRRC.
