Anticipation was high for what these 1960s touring cars would produce, and this 20-minute race delivered thrills in spades. Battles began as soon as the flag dropped – the three Minis of Adam Morgan, Nick Swift and Nick Padmore went together into Fordwater with only minimal contact, while the Cortinas of Max Chilton and Justin Law followed suit – close running could be found anywhere throughout the pack in those opening stages.
Polesitter Guy Smith held the lead in his Cortina, with Chilton and Law not too far behind. As Swift dropped back, Law and Morgan engaged in one of the many duels to emphasise the size differences found in this grid, this particular one being for third place.
As the race passed half-distance, the two podium-goers were joined by the Minis of Swift and Nick Padmore in a four-way fight for third, though Padmore would detach from the group and ultimately fail to finish. There was a sketchy moment, too, for the Mini of Michael Cullen, a spin off onto the grass relegating him down the field.
The sliding Minis certainly put on a show, but would one make it onto the podium? And would it be Chilton or Smith to take the chequered flag and ensure the Whitmore Cup would once again be claimed by a Cortina? Watch the full race to find out.
