There aren’t many racing cars that have such a deficit between their lap time relative to their performance from a standing start, but then there aren’t many racing cars like the 1905 Darracq 200 HP. This is the S.F. Edge Trophy at the 82nd Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport, in which a pack of wildly varying Edwardian-era machines scrap around the Goodwood Motor Circuit. It creates a spectacle unlike any other of the weekend.

Having started from pole position, Mark Walker had slipped back to eighth place by the time the pack reached the first corner. The reason? A combination of a difficult clutch and a tall first gear. His mission from that point on was to claw back as many of those lost places as possible, but with only four laps it seemed unlikely that he would reel in first-place man Julian Majzub and his 1916 Sunbeam ‘Indianapolis’.

Even so, he made a determined effort, steering from his shoulders and leaning into Goodwood’s high-speed corners. One by one, he picked off his rivals, out-dragging them on straights and trading places in the corners. Ideally though, he would need another couple of laps to take the lead from Majzub’s Sunbeam.
