When the flag dropped to start the Gurney Cup, most people would have bet on a Ford GT40 crossing the line first at the end of the race. The fast Fords are the dominant force, after all, and that’s as valid today as it was when they scored three consecutive wins at the Le Mans in the 1960s. And it was GT40s that dominated the front row of the grid and set the pace, as the field of sports racing prototypes settled into the first few laps of the race.

With lights ablaze, the cars look all the more evocative as the two-driver race runs into the dusk. The flow of things was interrupted when one of the GT40s lost a wheel and needed recovering for where it came to a rest at Woodcote.

A safety car led to a red flag and when the race restarted, all the driver changes had taken place and the cars reformed on the grid for what would essentially be a 20-minute sprint. With the professional drivers now at the controls, things were bound to get mixed up – and that’s exactly what transpired.

This race is simply a must-watch to see not just the drive of the weekend, but one that will go down in history as one if the greatest ever in a race at the Goodwood Motor Circuit.
