Back then it was a single race with a grid covering a twenty-year period from 1903 to 1923, and it was Duncan Pittaway at the wheel of his GN Curtiss that claimed victory in the eight-lap race only 0.230 seconds ahead of Mathias Sielecki’s Delage DH V12. The likes of Julian Majzub, Mark Walker and Ben Collings, who would go on to become big hitters in the S.F. Edge Trophy, were also among the field in that inaugural running.

Sielecki went one better in 2017, taking the chequered flag 0.592 seconds ahead of Patrick Blakeney-Edwards who had taken over stewardship of the GN Curtiss. Pittaway, meanwhile, had brought a new toy to play with, the ‘Beast of Turin’, the fearsome 28.4-litre engined Fiat S76, which we saw in action on the Motor Circuit for the first time.

If we thought those two previous results were close, the third S.F. Edge Trophy in 2019 was among the closest finishes we’ve ever had at Goodwood. Julian Majzub, now well known for his exploits in his Sunbeam ‘Indianapolis’, spent the entire race embroiled in a fierce battle for the lead with Tony Lees in his Vauxhall Viper Special. Both drivers had wheels on the grass at various points as they engaged in wheel-to-wheel combat, and as they crossed the finish line they were split by just 0.018 seconds.

The S.F. Edge Trophy returned at Speedweek a year later with a brand new two-race format. The results from both races were combined to crown an overall winner. It was another close-run thing, Ben Collings in his ‘Blitzen Benz’ saw off the challenge of Mark Walker’s Darracq 200hp to win Part 1 by 0.137 seconds. Hughie Walker, racing a Theophile Schneider Aero, won race two, again just ahead of Mark Walker, but pulled out a two-second gap to claim the first S.F. Edge combined victory.

Hughie Walker was the man to beat again at the 78th Members’ Meeting. He claimed victory in Part 1 and took second place behind Ben Collings in Part 2 to retain his crown ahead of Julian Majzub and Mark Walker.

After a year off in 2022, the S.F. Edge Trophy returned for the 80th Members’ Meeting, but two-time defending winner Hughie Walker was a notable absentee on the grid. The battle at the front was as fraught as ever, though, and the event was dominated by a spectacular duel between Mark Walker’s Darracq and Julian Majzub’s Sunbeam. Over two races, it was Walker who claimed overall victory by just four tenths of a second.

Majzub returned the favour a year later, he and Walker shared the spoils, across both races, but the Sunbeam took overall honours by half a second, as Majzub became the second driver to win the S.F. Edge Trophy twice.

It looked set to be another battle between Walker and Majzub at the 82nd Members’ Meeting, but a car failure for Majzub left the door open for Walker to storm to victory in the Darracq. After winning Part 1 by nearly seven seconds ahead of Ben Collings in his Mercedes 120hp, Walker could afford to coax the car home for what would be certain victory, but his competitive spirit would not allow it.

In his desperation to recover the lead after a slow start, he crashed out of Part 2, leaving Collings as the highest placed driver to finish both races and come away as the overall 2025 S.F. Edge Trophy winner.
