If you were fortunate enough to attend the 82nd Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport, the multiple temptations of admiring many rare and exceptional competition machines up close, along with some first-class motor racing means you would be understandably forgiven for not taking a quick detour away from the track to take a pleasurable meander through the Members’ Meeting Car Show for Members’ vehicles aged at least 30 years old or more.
Conveniently located just a few steps away from the main pedestrian entrance, this year the Members’ Meeting Car Show notably moved up a gear or two with around 500 classic vehicles on display over the weekend, ranging from tiny pre-war Austin Sevens right though to legendary 1970s Italian wedged supercars, such as the Lamborghini Countach, Ferrari 365 Berlinetta Boxer and De Tomaso Pantera, along with plenty of thoroughbred Aston Martins, Jaguar E-Types and Porsche 911s.
It’s always great fun to see the crazy ex-Le Mans pairing of 1950s Briggs Cunningham team Cadillacs that have previously appeared at a few Goodwood events: the unlikely ‘Petit Patard’ Type 61 Sedan and the wild ‘Le Monster’ barchetta, both of which competed in the 1950 Le Mans. The unlikely Cadillac Le Mans twins were amusingly accompanied just a few cars away by a mid-70s Eldorado, complete with iconic ‘Boss Hog’ bulls antlers mounted on the hefty front bumper.
Other notable rarities in attendance included a lovely late-1930s Atalanta, a scarce ‘50s Singer Hunter saloon and Falcon Bermuda sporting special, a mid-‘80s Mitsubishi (Colt) Lancer Turbo, plus a healthy variety of pre-war Rileys.
A pleasing selection of pre-war coachbuilt Rolls-Royce and Bentleys also graced the Members’ Meeting Car Show, joined by a wonderful Vauxhall 30/98, plus a rare (and very local) French 1920s BNC cyclecar.
A fine pair of significant Alfa Romeos was a real 82MM Car Show highlight, with a splendid 1930s 8C 2300 being kept company by stunning Touring-bodied 1900 SS coupé. An interesting but probably unintended contrast showcasing the varied design talents of Pininfarina saw a line-up of its older creations, ranging from a Fiat 124 Spider, a Peugeot 505 Break and a Ferrari 456 GT.
However, to the satisfaction of the Anorak’s personal automotive tastes, the positioning of a Citroën DS parked next to a Lancia Flavia Touring, or a Saab 900 rubbing mirrors with a Bristol 408 certainly took some beating!
