5 beautiful cars to see in the Moss Trophy

Aston Martin DB4GT

If you’re looking for a car that combines knock-out looks with sophisticated style and elegance, you’ll struggle to get better than Aston Martin, and the DB4 is one of the best. The DB4’s grille, wing vent and shapely rear end are carried over to the current models in the range, as is the DB4’s healthy performance. While it doesn’t boast a twin-turbo V8 like the current line-up, the DB4 GT was the fastest road-legal production car when it went on sale in the late ‘50s, thanks to a 153mph top speed. It got from 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds. 

Jaguar E-type

The Jaguar E-type could be used as a mould to shape all GT cars. With a bonnet like an infinity pool, a tiny glass house and a sloping rear end, it looks exactly how a GT should. It was the real deal under the skin, too, its shapely lines hiding innovations including disc brakes, independent suspension and rack-and-pinion steering. The Jaguar is also a past winner of the Moss Trophy, the partnership of Minshaw and Keen guiding an E-type to victory in 2018.

Ferrari 250 GT SWB/C

The Ferrari 250 GT SWB/C ticks all the boxes. It looks like a heavyweight GT, but touches like the round headlights, long bonnet scoop and sculpted rear end with quad tail pipes give it all of its own elegance. The Columbo V12 under the bonnet is a masterpiece, too, producing around 300PS (221kW) yet weighing almost half as much as the six-cylinder in a Jaguar E-type. 

Mercedes-Benz 300 SL 'Gullwing'

You won’t see the 300SL’s trademark gullwing doors up out on the track, but you don’t need to to know that this is a very special machine. The SL’s massive three-pointed star has become a byword for engineering excellence, and its body looks like it has been sculpted rather than designed. The Gullwing doors weren’t just for looks, they were necessitated by the enormous sills that added strength to the Merc’s spaceframe chassis. With just one 300 SL competing this year, expect it to grab plenty of glances. 

AC Cobra 

It’s hard to imagine a more brutally good-looking car than an AC Cobra. A car that perfectly blends the slinky body of a British sportscar with the heavyweight firepower of a Ford V8. Performance is as vivid as you would imagine in a car that pumps out 431PS (317kW) and weighs the same as a tennis shoe. Its creator, Carroll Shelby, didn’t bother boasting performance figures. Instead, under full acceleration, prospective buyers were challenged to grab a 100-dollar bill Shelby taped to the dashboard. None ever could. Unsurprisingly, a Cobra took third place at last year’s event. 

With this year’s tickets sold out, we’re delighted to announce that tickets for the 83^rd Members’ Meeting will be available for a limited time immediately after this year’s event -  at the best price they will be available – only for Members and Fellows of the GRRC. Admission and Grandstand tickets will go on sale on Monday 14^th April for Members, and Wednesday 16^th April for Fellows.
