Hailwood Trophy Part 2 highlights

Dan Jackson took the lead at the start of Part 2 of the Hailwood Trophy, winning the dash into Madgwick ahead of Glen English as Michael Russell made a slow start from pole position.

The top four of Jackson, English, Levi Day and Russell made a quick break from the following pack, and the four-way battle for victory was resumed. They were covered by barely a second as they circulated together.

Day made a bold overtake into Woodcote to steal the lead from Jackson as English began to drop back, but the top three remained absolutely together right up until the final corner where they went three-wide into the entrance of the Chicane for an incredibly dramatic finish.

Motorcycle racing is always hugely exciting at Goodwood, and this year’s edition of the Hailwood Trophy more than lived up to that billing.

Hailwood Trophy Part 1 highlights

It was Michael Russell that led away from pole position for Part 1 of the Hailwood Trophy, but not for long as he made a slow start, and dropped down the field, opening the door for Dan Jackson to charge into the lead ahead of the fast-starting Jeffrey Vermeulen.

Jackson had the pace at the front, and began to build a lead, taking advantage of the fact that his closest rival was having to battle his way back through the field. Russell got his head down though, and immediately began to make progress, climbing back up to second by the end of lap three.

From there it was a head-to-head battle between the leading pair, which continued for the remainder of the race, with the final margin at the chequered flag standing at just 0.536 seconds.

Official Practice for the Hailwood Trophy

Michael Russell put in a commanding display during the first track action of the   82nd Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport to take pole position for Part 1 of the Hailwood Trophy.

While everyone else eased into the session, Russell hit the ground running, carving a two-second lead straight off the bat, his 1972 RPS Triumph Trident T150 revelling in the perfect weather conditions and the Motor Circuit's high-speed corners.

By the session's halfway point, the Englishman was only getting quicker, pulling a 3.5-second lead ahead of Dan Jackson in second place riding a 1981 Harris-Yamaha TZ350. Russell had already bettered last year's fastest lap – a 1:28.1 set by Graham Higlet – but his times kept dropping.

The second-place battle was a far tighter affair as Higlet duelled with Jackson for the remaining spots on the front row, with the former ultimately taking second place.

But the session belonged to Russell, who dominated the 15-minute window, chiselling a gap of nearly 1.5 seconds between himself and Higlet. If Russell’s performance in Official Practice translates into race pace, he’s going to be very hard to beat on Saturday afternoon.

What is the Hailwood Trophy?

The motorcycle fixture at the Goodwood Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport combines two races in one. The Hailwood Trophy is named in honour of the nine-time World Champion who took all his titles in the 1960s, while his additional 14 Isle of Man TT race wins helped secure his status as one of the greatest motorcycle racers of all time.

Within the same grid is the Barry Sheene Trophy named in honour of the two-time champion. The joint Hailwood Trophy featuring Sheene Trophy will run as a two-part race throughout the 82nd Members' Meeting weekend, with a traditional Le Mans-style start where riders have to run to their machines from the opposite side of the track.

Which motorcycles race in the Hailwood Trophy?

There are two distinct packs in the Hailwood Trophy featuring Sheene Trophy race. The Hailwood Trophy is for 250cc and 350cc two-stroke Grand Prix racers, while the Barry Sheene Trophy is for Formula 750 motorcycles, the predecessors of today’s World Superbike machines. The contrast between the more agile Hailwood motorcycles and the more powerful Sheene bikes that are faster on the straights.

Yamaha TZ350s tend to lead the field in the smaller-engined class, while the larger one features Triumphs, Hondas, Harley-Davidsons and Norton Manxes. The bikes range from 1971 to 1982.
