The Formula Junior cars of the Arundel Cup featuring Taylor Trophy might not be the most powerful cars to take to the Goodwood Motor Circuit, but that doesn’t mean they lack competitive spirit. Quite the opposite: the need to maintain momentum means their drivers skilfully coax their small and nimble cars, preserving every ounce of forward motion.
The Formula Juniors of the Arundell Cup emerged for their final action of the weekend at the 82nd Members’ Meeting on Sunday morning, and conditions looked ripe for an entertaining race.
There were shocks from moment one, as pole-sitter Sam Wilson in his Cooper T59 was overtaken first by the Brabham of Alexander Ames and then by Clive Richards' Lotus 22. Wilson would soon take that place back, and what started as a two-car battle between him and Ames became a four-way tussle as Richards and Callum Grant's Merlyn-Ford reeled in the leaders.
As the leading four broke away from the rest of the pack, backmarkers presented a potential stumbling block, as Wilson, Grant, Ames and Richards swapped places between them lap after lap. It was heart-in-mouth stuff at times.
The four of them stayed within touching distance right until the very end, with the top three crossing the finish line within a second of each other. A brilliant race, and one well worth a watch.
Lotus, Brabham and Cooper tend to make up the sharp end of the grid with Formula Junior cars, and it’s usually the Lotus 22 that’s the car to beat. And beat them Sam Wilson did at the wheel of his Cooper T59 during Official Practice.
He secured pole position, the gap to the second place Brabham B6 of Alexander Ames being counted in thousands of a second. Clive Richard secured third place aboard his Lotus 22 to make a front row with three different marques.
Little more the a second separates the first five cars, so we can expect very close racing when the flag drops.

The Arundell Cup returns for its second running at the 82nd Members’ Meeting presented by Audrain Motorsport. The race for rear-engined Formula Junior cars takes its name from Team Lotus driver Peter Arundell who rose through the single-seater ranks to become Jim Clark’s team mate in Formula 1. He showed great promise, too, claiming two podium positions in his first two races, before an accident in Formula 2 effectively ended his career.
Goodwood’s Arundell Cup celebrates his successes in Formula Junior where he won the British Championship in 1961 and ’63. It’s a 20-minute one-driver race and the driver of the first drum-braked car to finish will in the Taylor Trophy, named after another Team Lotus driver, Trevor Taylor.
It’s no coincidence that there are two Team Lotus names marked by the Arundell Cup, as it’s the Lotus 22 that’s always the car to beat in Formula Junior racing. Other well-known constructors on the grid include Brabham, Lola and Cooper, while lesser-known Caravelles, Kiefts and Merlyns will also be in evidence.
The field is largely made up of owner drivers, many of whom have several years experience not just of Formula Junior but also at the Goodwood Motor Circuit. Close racing is guaranteed as the drivers battle to maintain momentum to get to the flag first.
Practice for the Formula Junior cars is scheduled to take place at 12:30 on the Saturday, while the flag will drop to get race under way at 10:00 on Sunday.
