Things begin with a track parade of Volkswagen Type 2s. While they are best known as campervans, Volkswagen itself only ever made them in commercial vehicle form and left it to the aftermarket to create rolling home versions, and we were once again treated to a wonderfully varied parade of vehicles. The first race of the day was the Goodwood Trophy, drivers of the pre-war open-wheelers contending with the spray and low grip that came with the track.
Things stayed that way for Official Practice for the RAC TT Celebration. The Jaguar E-type drivers will have been pleased with the conditions, as it favoured them over the Cobras. Precipitation may have been less welcome for riders in the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy, the two-wheelers having to manage grip levels very carefully.
Conditions were improving for the Madgwick Cup, and by the time the Jim Clark Tribute started there were blue skies. Before Clark’s cars began circulating Goodwood, they were lined up on the grid and a flock of sheep ran between them. Yes, really. It was all intentional: Clark was of course a farmer first and a World Championship driver second.
The weather held for the rest of the day, so we were treated to a high-drip St. Mary’s Trophy Part 1 where the professional drivers went door to door in their 1950s saloon cars. They were followed by the sports cars from the Fordwater Trophy, bigger and more powerful sports cars in the Whitsun Trophy while the day was rounded off by the Stirling Moss Memorial Trophy.
Get your snacks lined up and indulge in a full day of Goodwood action.
