The Goodwood Revival has a race for everyone, even the youngest of motorsport enthusiasts. The Settrington Cup presented by Ralph Lauren is a two-part race for four to ten-year-olds, who compete on an abridged distance on the Motor Circuit in a field of Austin J40 pedal cars.
A contest held in two parts, the first race took place on Saturday morning, with Dylan Turner bursting through the top of the midfield to take victory
Turner's success following rom an explosive Le Mans start, where he passed ten cars away from the line thanks to furious pedalling to secured the victory. The steely-eyed youngster didn't even look back as he speared ahead of the competition before cleanly negotiating the chicane.
Turner's pedal power looked like it could wane away from the chicane, but after a swift glimpse over his shoulder he summoned the extra push needed to secure victory comfortably.
Ella Barmettler followed close behind in second place after some determined pedalling. There was a real battle for the last podium place, though, with a trio of J40s running abreast before Hugo Upward broke free to secure last place on the podium.
Turner attributed the win to practising the start with his father, Darren.
"Me and my dad have been practising getting going at the start," Turner shared. "That's basically the most important part of the race, and we have been progressing ever since — it's been one of the best moments ever, winning it."
Part 2 of the Settrington Cup got off as frantically on Sunday as Part 1, as 50 future motorsport stars took part in the Le Mans-style start to the race, this time with the grid reversed.
Charlie Buncombe's #6 car took an early lead, but Devon Isobel Baker in car #39 drew alongside before the pair reached the chicane, closing the door on her competitor to take the lead.
From there, it was a heavy pedal to cross the finish line, but Baker took the win, followed by Buncombe in second and Cyrus Majzub's #41 in third. As the winning drivers lined up, backmarkers were still negotiating the chicane — some receiving a welcome push.
Reflecting on her worthy win, Baker said: "It was very good. I've been doing lots of practice and eating vegetables to prepare."
Speaking of his second-place finish, Buncombe commented on his battle with his Austin J40's cramped cockpit, saying: "My knees, they're really touching… Grandad and Dad have been helping with the car a lot.. They just say deal with the pain, force the pain through.”
The overall result is determined from a combination of the two races, so the ultimate winner of the 2025 Settrington Cup was Majzub, who’s third place on Sunday added to a strong tenth-place finish on Saturday.
