The day kicked off with an almighty celebration of the Volkswagen Type 2, where Campervan versions were joined by pick-ups, fire trucks, ambulances, panelvans and more. In fact, there were more than 120 different examples, swarming across the Motor Circuit’s tarmac.
We also saw practice and qualifying for all of the weekend’s races, including the two-wheeled Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy, alongside two parades. The first was a tribute to the late Jim Clark, a sheep farmer by trade who became a two-time Formula 1 World Champion and a regular racer at Goodwood. More than 30 different machines took to the Motor Circuit, from his Indy 500-winning Lotus 38 to his Lotus 25 F1 car and everything in between.
The other parade was for Alfa Romeo, a moment to look back at a stellar period of motorsport for the Italian marque. A more beautiful line-up of vehicles you couldn’t hope to see.
The on-track action culminated with the first race of the weekend, the Freddie March Memorial Trophy. A dry start was followed with a torrential downpour, with one driver pairing emerging ahead of the field to take victory by more than a minute. Which driver pairing? Well, that would be too easy.
