Harrison was soon swamped by faster bikes, and by the end of the first lap Glen English's #7 Matchless G50 was leading the race before Dan Jackson swept past him to take first place before the end of the second lap.
The Matchless bikes were so evenly matched, barely a cigarette paper separated the leading pair, with English popping out of the slipstream of the leading rider on more than one occasion, but never able to make the move stick.
But the #82 Norton Manx was looking like it could challenge for victory, lapping two seconds a lap quicker than the leaders, who were nearly six seconds further up the track and still sparring like their lives depended on it.
In fact, just as English looked like he would never find a way past Jackson, he sprang out from the slipstream and passed the leader just before they dived into the chicane to complete the fourth lap of the race.
Just as English took the initiative, though, Jackson took it back slipstreaming up the pit straight and pulling off a successful overtake. All the while, the #82 of Mark Taylor was drawing closer, lapping two seconds quicker than the bikes in front, now less than one second behind.
Six laps in, anyone from Jackson, Taylor and English could take victory, and there was still the tricky rider change to contend with at the halfway point.
Would the Jackson/Hillier bike take victory, or would there be a wildcard win? And on top of all that. would the weather stay dry? For the answers to those questions and more, watch the full race right here.
