Despite Mother Nature's best efforts, all the riders got away cleanly. Billy McConnell pulled an impressive lead from second-placed Michael Russell as the rain stopped, the sun came out and the track started to dry.
Davey Todd on the #52 BMW had made an even more impressive start, making up 20 places before the end of the second lap. Todd was making the most of the wet conditions, measuring out the power to balance his bike between stick and slip, and giving Sylvain Barrier on the chasing #8 bike a thorough drenching as he pushed through standing water on the start-finish straight.
Meanwhile, Storm Stacey and Lee Johnston were having an epic duel, dancing their bikes through St. Mary's, with Johnston eventually finding himself out in front.
In first position, Billy McConnell was building himself a solid lead with times falling as the track dried out. He was consistently lapping four seconds quicker than his rivals who were now trailing almost 15 seconds behind.
Just as the racing was hotting up, the riders had to deal with another foe: strategy. With the pits opening for the mandatory rider swaps, the teams had to decide when the pros should make way for owner-riders.
Meanwhile, while Michael Dunlop's team was weighing up when to make its rider change, he had charged from 25th to sixth and was now nibbling at the heels of Johnston and Stacey in fourth and fifth respectively.
With the jeopardy of both the rider change and the weather, had McConnell done enough to win the race? Click the top of your screen to watch the video and find out.
