A damp surface promised more than a little excitement when the flag dropped for the one-hour, two-driver RAC TT Celebration. There’s nothing like compromised grip to focus the concentration of a Cobra driver. It was the owner-drivers out first, and the drive of the race goes to Oli Bryant who started from last position and scythed his way to second place before handing over to BTCC star driver Jake Hill.

Hill had an alarming moment when the CUT7 Jaguar E-type made brushing contact, its early dominance in the wet eroding as conditions improved. Hill kept the car on the road and in passing the Jaguar took the lead. And in the lead he stayed for some time, setting fastest lap after fastest lap while taking advantage of clear traffic.

But his position would eventually be challenged. TVR owner Mike Whittaker had left much for his pro driver Tom Ingram to do, but consistent pace saw him catch the Hill-pedalled Cobra. Hill did everything he could to defend his position, but Ingram was biting his ankles for lap after lap. Eventually, the TVR driver found his moment and claimed the lead, a position he didn’t relinquish. By now, the sun made its first lengthy appearance of the entire weekend.

After the race, Ingram commented on how confidence-inspiring the TVR is to drive. From the outside, it appears to have no shortage of body roll, but perhaps the secret to taming a car with a surfeit of power and short wheelbase. Whatever, it clearly works. And the car has history at Goodwood: in 1965, it was raced here by a World War II fighter pilot. A fitting victor of the 2024 RAC TT Celebration.
