The Goodwood Revival hosted a particularly poignant moment on Saturday afternoon as Sir Jackie Stewart was inducted into the legendary Goodwood Ton Club by the Duke of Richmond.
Sixty years after Stewart set the lap record, a time matched by his friend Jim Clark, during the 1965 Sunday Mirror Trophy, the three-time Formula 1 World Champion was honoured with a special induction into the Ton Club.
Signifying this special moment, Stewart was awarded with a newly commissioned ‘Ton’ trophy, a prize that was originally handed out by Freddie March, the Ninth Duke of Richmond, to all drivers who completed a 100mph lap of the Motor Circuit.
As cars became more capable, speeds increased exponentially through the early 1960s, and the Ton was eventually discontinued as a concept as any and all comers were now capable of achieving the feat.
By 1965, the likes of Innes Ireland, Stirling Moss and Clark had all been awarded with Goodwood Tons, but Stewart remained excluded from that group despite his joint record.
This was put right on Saturday at the 2025 Goodwood Revival, when Stewart was finally presented with his own Ton, inscribed with both his and Clark’s name in honour of his achievement.
The special ceremony took place as part of an extended tribute to Clark which saw many of motorsport’s greatest drivers congregate on the Grid to congratulate Stewart as the whole of Goodwood honoured the memory of the 1963 and ’65 World Champion.
Speaking at the ceremony, Stewart said Clark was a “wonderful friend”, and the emotion was obvious as he remembered the man with whom he shared so much of his early motorsport career.
The Duke of Richmond said: “This is very much to right the historic wrong that Jackie never received this trophy in period, and something I hope he will be able to add to his unbelievably full trophy cabinet.”
