In this 60th anniversary year of Jim Clark’s remarkable 1965 season, an astounding collection of his cars gathered at the Goodwood Motor Circuit to celebrate the Scotsman’s career.
With over 30 different cars parading on track, the breadth of machinery on show gave us the opportunity to truly appreciate just how versatile Clark was as a driver.
There was of course the familiar sight of the Lotus 25 and his Indianapolis 500 victor, the Lotus 38, there were also several Ford Cortinas in the pack to represent Clark’s touring car career — which included British Saloon Car Championship wins at Goodwood in the early 1960s, a period now reimagined with the St. Mary’s Trophy presented by Motul.
The Lotus 38 was aptly driven by another Scottish Indy 500 winner, Dario Franchitti, who spoke of his admiration of Jim Clark before heading out on track, while Clark’s Tasman Series winning car from that same year, the Lotus 32B, was present after an admirable restoration job from Classic Team Lotus.
This poignant moment on the Goodwood Motor Circuit had it all, everything from a Lotus 49 Clark raced in 1967 to an ERA B-Type R5B ‘Remus’ Clark once drove for fun in Rouen more than 30 years earlier. There was nothing this natural talent wouldn’t take for a spin, even a 1958 Alfa Romeo Giulietta Sprint Veloce Clark tested with the Border Reivers team, lest you accuse him of being a one-make driver.
Even the rain that arrived during Friday’s Jim Clark celebration couldn’t dampen the mood. In fact, considering the great man’s mastery of wet weather conditions, it could even be considered fitting.
Clark’s pure love of racing shines through when all of these cars assemble, and it’s a sight we’re glad we get to enjoy again over the next two days at the Revival.
