If you were watching a modern motorsport event, whether it was a race in Formula 1, the World Endurance Championship or the BTCC, you’d be over the moon if the gap between the duo in second and third was coming down by two tenths a lap, wouldn’t you? Suffice to say we were on the edge of our seat, then, for this year’s Lavant Cup. Not only is it a spectacular race in terms of the cars on the grid — no fewer than 16 priceless 1950s Maserati and Ferrari sportscars — but this was a corker for the racing itself. Could the leader hang on to take the top prize? Would the cars behind be able to battle, lap after lap, without incident?

The 2026 Goodwood Revival’s La Dolce Vita theme meets our Maserati celebration in the Lavant Cup. But despite it being 100 years since Maserati’s first major motorsport victory, it won’t have it all its own way in this Battle of Modena; the grid features rivals from Maranello for a very special Ferrari vs. Maserati fixture.

In Official Practice, the cameras were initially following the Ferrari 500 TRC of James Cottingham and the Ferrari 250 MM of Frank Stippler. Stippler was able to stay with Cottingham’s younger, more powerful car in scenes that resembled a race rather than qualifying. 

In the end, though, Richard Wilson proved to have the legs on both of them at the wheel of his Maserati 250S in order to claim the first position on the grid. Joe Macari was second fastest with his very effective Ferrari 250TR with Cottingham rounded out the top three places. 

Of the top ten places, Ferraris occupied six positions. Josef Rettenmaier retained his fifth position despite his Maserati 450S looking very ill in the closing moments of Official Practice. The car was smoking heavily and spun on its own fluids.

When is the 2026 Lavant Cup? 

This Italian racing spectacle begins on Friday afternoon with the Official Practice session commencing at 12:50. The race itself is set for Saturday at 14:40, an unmissable clash between two of Italy’s most prestigious marques.

This year, a highly experienced field of drivers will take to the grid for the Lavant Cup, each hoping to etch their name into motorsport history. Among them is returning winner James Cottingham, who will be looking to fight his way through an exceptionally competitive pack to claim another victory.

The 2026 Lavant Cup promises a thrilling line-up of cars, just as you’d expect from a Battle of Modena. Spectators are truly spoiled for choice with the machinery on display; some of the world's most beautiful Ferraris and Maseratis are set to compete, including a returning past winner, the sleek Ferrari 500 TRC. Joining the fray are masterpieces like the Ferrari 250 Monza and the spectacular Maserati A6GCS.
