The Goodwood Trophy celebrates the post-war grids that lined up during the early years of the Motor Circuit in the late 1940s and early '50s. As such, this race brings together some of the oldest cars at the Revival, including a number of pre-war machines.
The Goodwood Trophy was preceded by a torrential downpour on Saturday morning, which made for treacherous track conditions at the start of the race as Ian Baxter lead the field away from pole position. He didn’t stay there for long though, because David Morris in his ERA B-Type made the best start from the middle of the front row to take the lead on the run towards Madgwick.
Patrick Blakeney-Edwards at the wheel of his Frazer Nash ‘Fane’ Monoposto was a lively figure as he too made a bright start from the inside of the third row. He was up to fourth by the time they approached St. Mary’s for the first time amongst the spray.
The lead changed again as Mark Gillies crept underneath Morris under braking for Woodcote, and he set about attempting to pull away in his ERA A-Type. Morris and Blakeney-Edwards were not about to let that happen, however, and the pair fought hard to keep Gillies in sight. Too hard in the case of Morris, who found the wall to bring out the safety car as the conditions continued to cause problems for the entire field.
Big gains were made further back, particularly by Andrew Willis in the stunning blue Maserati 8CTF. He put in a stellar drive that eventually saw him climb into the podium places ahead of Baxter, who struggled to maintain speed in his Alta 61 IS.
All eyes remained on the battle for the lead, though, as Blakeney-Edwards gave it everything to overthrow Gillies. But the ERA proved a little too comfortable out in front, and Gillies held on to take the chequered flag in the first race of Saturday here at the 2025 Goodwood Revival.

Few races at Revival are more fascinating than the Goodwood Trophy, which pays homage to the origins of motorsport at the Motor Circuit as pre-war machines were pulled from their sheds and returned to the racetrack as the world sought to recover in the wake of World War II.
After a slow build up as these incredible cars got up to temperature, it was Richard Bradley in his Maserati 4CL who set the early pace ahead of David Morris in the leading ERA B-type. The seven-time Goodwood Trophy winner Mark Gillies was in the hunt too at the wheel of the ERA A-type.
Ian Baxter was on the move in the final ten minutes as he climbed his green Alta 61 IS up into second place, just two tenths of a second behind provisional pole sitter Bradley. Patrick Blakeney-Edwards meanwhile was challenging for a place in the top five in his Frazer Nash Monoposto.
But with a clear track in front of him, it was Baxter who found more pace to snatch pole position with a final lap time of 1:32.606. Bradley was forced to settle for second place after a late yellow flag curtailed any additional progress, with Morris rounding out the front row.

In the years immediately after World War II, when racing first began at the Goodwood Motor Circuit on the former RAF Westhampnett site, grids of the fledgling Formula 1 category were made up from a mixture of new machines and those from pre-war years. It was a case of using whatever was available.
Reg Parnell was the first recipient of the Goodwood Trophy, winning the Goodwood F1 non-Championship race at the inaugural meeting in 1948. Parnell maintained his hold of the trophy the following year, repeating the feat once again in his Maserati 4CLT/48, and made it three-in-a-row in 1950, though this time driving for BRM.
That was the only triumph for a British marque, the Goodwood Trophy returned to Italian hands in 1951 when Giuseppe Farina bested Parnell in his Alfa Romeo 159, while Stirling Moss won the final contest for Maserati in 1954.
Given how significant these races are in the Motor Circuit’s history, the Goodwood Trophy opened the first Revival in 1998 and has been on the race card at every event since.
Today’s 20-minute spectacle brings together Grand Prix and Voiturette cars from 1930 to all the way to 1951, with an entry list that includes ERAs, Maseratis and Alfa Romeos that pre-date the F1 World Championship that celebrates its 75th anniversary this year.
Immediately following the first Jim Clark tribute of the weekend, Official Practice for the 2025 Goodwood Trophy gets underway on Friday afternoon at 12:05. That 20-minute session will decide the starting grid for Saturday’s race, which kicks off the day’s motorsport action bright and early at 09:35. Prepare to enjoy the Revival’s most primitive racing action, with no shortage of drama and excitement.
