The Glover Trophy is one of the most prestigious races in the Goodwood Revival, celebrating the proud history of Formula 1 racing at the Motor Circuit. Today’s rendition tributes one of F1’s most popular non-Championship races with a grid evoking one of the most romantic eras of the sport.
After two laps behind the safety car, the Glover Trophy got underway in torrential rain at the 2025 Goodwood Revival. As the field of 1960s Formula 1 cars got up to speed the collective roar of Climax V8 engines could be heard far and wide.
The Brabham BT7 of Lukas Halusa led the train over the line and opened up a handy lead before he’d even made it to the first corner, but it didn’t take long for the #36 Lotus 21 of Stuart Hall to begin reeling in his prey. He quickly dispatched Halusa after the leader ran wide into Lavant, opening the door for Hall to cruise through.
Conditions were treacherous for these incredibly lightweight cars, but Hall seemed to have more grip than those around him and quickly disappeared into the distance. His lead grew to more than six seconds by the end of the fourth lap, but the battle behind him was hotting up.
Ben Mitchel in his Cooper T56 was looking racy in the slipstream of Halusa, and his pressure eventually told as he found his way past and up into second place. Halusa remained in contention for a podium finish, but a mistake at the Chicane that put him into the clutches of Kyle Tilley behind.
Tilley in the distinctive Gilby Type B spent several laps in Halusa’s wheel tracks, and finally made his move on the exit of the Chicane with 11 minutes to go. The win was realistically out of sight for Tilley, but he set off in chase of Mitchell ahead in an attempt to make it into second place.
The pair spent the next ten minutes engaged in a relentless and hugely entertaining battle, but the Cooper just managed to keep the Gilby at bay as they navigated traffic in worsening conditions. As Hall crossed the line to start his final lap, Mitchell and Tilley were side-by-side heading down the Lavant Straight, and Tilley hurled absolutely everything at it as he ran wide around Woodcote, eventually having to settle for third at the end of a brilliant Glover Trophy race.
Among the mixed bag of weather that was day one of the 2025 Goodwood Revival, the Glover Trophy drivers came off well with sunshine and blue skies for their Official Practice. You could be forgiven for thinking it was a race at times, with wheel-to-wheel overtaking manoeuvres as they vied to set the fastest time. And it was close, just a fraction more than two seconds separates the top five times.
When the session came to a close, we ended with three different constructors on the front row of the grid, with the Brabham BT7 of Lukas Halusa leading Joe Colasacco’s Ferrari 1512 which bested the Lotus 21 of Mark Shaw. One thing’s for sure, the Glover Trophy race is going to be closely contested.

The original Glover Trophy was contested by some of the world’s greatest racing drivers. Named after Dan Glover of United Lubricants Ltd., it was first awarded to the winner of the 500 International Trophy Race for 500cc Formula 3 cars. By 1955, the Glover Trophy had evolved into an annual non-Championship Formula 1 race.
No shortage of top names claimed the trophy in period: Mike Hawthorn, Innes Ireland, John Surtees, Graham Hill, Reg Parnell and Roy Salvadori were all winners, as the Motor Circuit became a destination of the brightest talents of the day.
The Glover continuation first took place at the inaugural Goodwood Revival in 1998 and has run ever since, gathering a grid of 1.5-litre Grand Prix cars that raced between 1961-’65. In period, the Lotus 25 was typically the car to beat, and that has remained the case to this day. However, a full field is there to keep the Cheshunt cars honest, with Cooper, BRM and Ferrari all making their mark in the 25-minute race.
The Glover Trophy grid will first be on track on Friday evening, with the 20-minute Official Practice commencing at 16:50. That session is all the warm up these competitors will have, as times from Friday will determine the grid order for the race. One of the closing events of the 2025 Revival, we will have to wait until Sunday for the Glover Trophy race, when the flag drops at 15:55.
