There’s no other race like the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy, it’s the place to get your motorcycle fix during the Goodwood Revival weekend, which is the only historic motorsport event to host both cars and bikes. With its Le Mans-style start and knee-down action, the Revival’s annual motorcycle race has established itself as a regular highlight of the weekend.
The historic motorcycles returned to the Motor Circuit one more time on Sunday morning to round up a brilliant weekend of two-wheeled action at the 2025 Revival. The weather held to give these riders a dry-ish track on their final outing, and it was Dean Harrison who made the best of the Le Mans-style start to lead from Dan Jackson.
It was the shared bike of Tony Perkin and Billy McConnell who had it all to lose in race two following their dominant 42-second victory in Part 1, and they surely had their eye on overall victory in this year’s Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy from seventh on the grid. The #24 bike did not look as comfortable as it did in the wet conditions on Saturday however, and Perkin was quickly left behind by the leading pack.
The early stages saw a close battle for the lead between Jackson and Glen English, and English eventually made the move stick around Woodcote only to lose out again as Jackson got the better exit from the Chicane. Their brawl allowed Mark Taylor to join the fray, and he got stuck straight into a brilliantly entertaining race.
Taylor and English swapped positions corner after corner, just barely avoiding contact in what was a fabulous demonstration of bike control, but their battle was cut short as the rider swaps began. One surprise came as Saturday’s winner Tony Perkin pitted but remained on the bike to complete the entire race himself. It was an unusual but entirely legal move, but not one that aided Perkin’s need to close the gap to the leaders.
The three leading bikes converged again on the same small section of track, now ridden by James Hillier, Steve Player and 2018 British Superbike champion Leon Haslam, and the battle continued unabated.
With five minutes to go, Hillier began to stretch the legs of his Matchless G50 and built a substantial lead while Plater and Haslam behind fought hard for second place. With Perkin now out of contention for the overall victory some 50 seconds behind his nearest rivals, the pairing of Michael Russell and Emanuele Pirro were still in with an outside chance if they could close the gap to those ahead.
Hillier crossed the line to claim victory in the second part of the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy, Haslam finished strongly to take second place ahead of Plater in third.
The traditional Le Mans-style start for the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy made for a stunning beginning to the Revival’s motorcycle race on Saturday morning, as 30 riders battled to claim track position away from the line. Michael Russell made the best start and led decisively into Madgwick as rest of the field filed through behind.
A soaking wet track made for a remarkable spectacle as the leaders went three-wide into Fordwater as they weaved their way through the puddles of standing water around the back of the Motor Circuit.
By the end of the first lap, however, it was Billy McConnell who had already begun to string out a lead at the front ahead of Michael Russell and Steve Plater. The big winner in the early stages however was Isle of Man TT star Davey Todd, who made up more than 20 positions to climb into sixth place by the end of the second lap, but was unfortunately forced to retire with a mechanical issue.
McConnell meanwhile continued to extend the gap, but Russell and Plater were engaged in a close battle for second place. Behind them, a brilliant battle for fourth place was playing out between Storm Stacey, Lee Johnston and 33-time Isle of Man TT winner Michael Dunlop, who started way down in 25th place.
There was slight confusion with eight minutes to go as several riders, including race leader McConnell and second-placed man Russell, failed to pit within the allotted window for the obligatory rider change. The penalty for that transgression is 30 seconds, yet it was McConnell’s team-mate Tony Perkin who took the chequered flag on the road with a 42-second lead, so we’ll wait to see how the final order shuffles out ahead of Part 2 tomorrow.
The Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy has become more than just a race for historic motorcycles. The Revival’s two-wheeled showcase has become a hugely competitive cauldron of many of the world’s greatest ever bike racers, with Isle of Man TT legends rubbing shoulders with champions in British and World Superbikes.
The result on Friday morning was a breathless Official Practice session as the bikes were very quickly up to speed under bright sunshine. It was the Matchless G50 vs Norton Manx 30M show in the early stages, as Michael Russell broke clear at the front of the field with a 1:30.908. That bike will be one to watch this weekend, as Russell and his team-mate Emanuele Pirro attempt an unprecedented partnership on both two and four wheels.
It was Norton Manx one and two with ten minutes to go, as Storm Stacey claimed provisional pole position with a 1:29.597, but the pride of the Matchless was retained as the Seb Perez and Josh Brookes bike broke into second place. The lap times were tumbling as the chequered flag approached and the riders got themselves bedded into the conditions.
After handing over to Pirro for the obligatory three laps, Russell returned to the track to try and reclaim top spot and did just that with a 1:29.033. TT star James Hillier emerged as the nearest challenger with a strong turn of speed to go within two tenths of the leaders, but no-one had an answer to the speed of Russell.

In period, motorcycles raced on just one day at Goodwood. On 14th April 1951, the circuit hosted everything from 250cc motorcycles to 1,200cc sidecars, and it’s that spring day from more than seven decades ago that’s recreated with the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy.
It’s named in honour of the two-time Grand Prix motorcycle champion, who competed in his final race on British soil at the Goodwood Revival in 2002.
This year’s race will see the grid for this two-rider race populated by machinery built between 1948 and ‘66, so expect to enjoy Norton Manx 30Ms battling Matchless G50s and BMWs around the high-speed Goodwood Motor Circuit.
The Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy is run in 25-minute two parts, which gives us the opportunity to enjoy thrilling motorcycle action on all three days of the event. It begins with Official Practice on Friday at 10:20, that 30-minute session will determine the starting grid for Part 1 held on Saturday morning, at 11:05. Part 2 of the Barry Sheene Memorial Trophy will then take place at 12:20 on Sunday, with the results of both races aggregated to determine the overall winners.
