Cosmos in Focus brings the universe to FOS Future Lab

03rd July 2025
James Day

The universe has been making headlines lately, and not just for its beauty. Recently, news broke of a “city killer” asteroid codenamed 2024 YR4, roughly the size of a 15-storey building and projected to come perilously close to Earth in 2032.

Initial reports suggested a potential impact just before Christmas, but NASA’s latest data indicates it’s more likely to collide with the Moon. Thanks to the vigilant eye of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), scientists are tracking this celestial threat while capturing jaw-dropping imagery of distant galaxies, planets, and cosmic dust. These images, which have captivated the world, form the heart of Cosmos in Focus, a film that transforms raw data into a cinematic voyage through the stars.

Launched in 2021, the JWST has revolutionised our understanding of the cosmos. Its ability to capture high-resolution images of celestial phenomena — think swirling galaxies, glowing nebulae, and distant exoplanets — has not only advanced scientific research but also inspired awe across the globe.

There has been a surge in searches for “James Webb Space Telescope images” and “space exploration” in 2025, reflecting our growing fascination with the universe. Cosmos in Focus taps into this curiosity, offering an accessible yet profound way to experience these cosmic wonders.

Atlantic Studios, renowned for collaborations with figures like Sir David Attenborough, has a history of pushing storytelling boundaries. Their work, seen in over 150 countries, includes award-winning films like The Wildest Dream: Conquest of Everest and the groundbreaking VR experience Galapagos with David Attenborough

Partnering with the University of Sussex, a hub for astrophysical research, they’ve crafted a film that’s both visually stunning and intellectually enriching. Featuring insights from NASA and European Space Agency scientists, Cosmos in Focus decodes the JWST’s imagery, revealing secrets about the universe’s origins and our place within it.

FOS Future Lab presented by Randox is the perfect stage for Cosmos in Focus, where you’ll also find cutting-edge technology from electric hypercars to AI innovations. This year, visitors can don the Apple Vision Pro — a mixed-reality headset praised for its immersive capabilities — to embark on a journey through space.

The Apple Vision Pro offers unparalleled visual clarity and interactivity. Its mixed-reality capabilities make you feel like an astronaut, placing you inside the universe, surrounded by high-resolution JWST imagery. You’ll soar past glittering star clusters, peer into the hearts of nebulae and uncover the science behind these cosmic spectacles.

The film’s educational potential is immense. By blending art and technology, it offers a glimpse into how immersive storytelling can inspire future generations of scientists and explorers. Schools and institutions could adopt similar experiences to spark interest in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields. At FOS Future Lab, Cosmos in Focus is a portal to the universe, inviting everyone from curious kids to seasoned stargazers to explore the final frontier.

Atlantic Studios’ expertise in immersive storytelling, combined with the University of Sussex’s scientific rigour creates an experience that’s both awe-inspiring and grounded in fact. The film addresses timely questions about our universe — how it formed, what it holds and how we can protect our planet from cosmic threats like 2024 YR4.
