The 7 classes of the 2025 Cartier Style et Luxe

02nd July 2025
Simon Ostler

We all love to see the world’s greatest road and racing cars flying up the famous Goodwood Hill during the Festival of Speed presented by Mastercard, but everyone needs a break from the roar of engines now and again. And what better place to break up your day than the Cartier Style et Luxe, Goodwood’s annual concours d’elegance.

This year, the Cartier Lawn, which is located to the southwest of Goodwood House, will be the stage for seven mouth-watering classes that will each feature cars of scarcely believable prestige.

Origin of Opulence - 100 Years of the Rolls-Royce Phantom

First up we have arguably the most magnificent collection of cars to ever grace the Cartier Lawn. The Festival of Speed will mark the centenary of the Rolls-Royce Phantom with a class dedicated to many of the world’s most remarkable first-generation Phantoms.

Each bespoke to the eye, and housing Rolls-Royce’s 7.7-litre straight-six engine, this class will feature the unmistakable ‘Phantom of Love’, a 1926 model with coachwork by Charles Clark & Son. While this car’s exquisite detailing is likely to garner plenty of attention, those in the know will want to get a closer look at this car’s astonishing interior.

Among the other rare exhibits within this class is an Experimental Sports Prototype, chassis 17EX, a car developed to explore a potential entry into motorsport. Then there’s ‘The Black Diamond’, a Phantom Sportsman Saloon with coachwork by Hooper & Son. It was said that this car’s original owner, a diamond magnate by the name of Otto Oppenheimer, requested a secret compartment be configured to allow for the storage and safe transportation of precious gems.

All of the cars included in this beautifully curated class of Rolls-Royce Phantoms will boast its own prestige. This is bound to be one of the greatest collections the world has ever seen.

Balance of Power - Bugatti’s Game-Changing Veyron

Quite unbelievably, it’s 20 years this year since we were first introduced to the 1,001PS Bugatti Veyron, and the Cartier Lawn will be beating the drum for a car that defined an era. In its various forms, the Veyron was recognised as the fastest street-legal production car in the world, with a top speed of 253mph.

Powered by a frankly ludicrous 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16 engine, which remained in rotation until 2024, the Veyron’s mind-boggling performance was beaten only by its successor, the Chiron, when it was introduced in 2016.

This legacy will be celebrated by a comprehensive selection of Veyrons that will perfectly showcase the car’s diversity and pedigree. Perhaps the most significant will be the Veyron XP5.5, the prototype that was used to set the world speed record. It's distinguishable by the sizable vents carved into the trailing edge of the front wheel arches.

Expect to see Veyron Grand Sports, Veyron Super Sports and more as part of this remarkable class of cars.

Viva Las Vega - Parisian Panache, American Punch

Facel Vega is surely one of the more extraordinary marques of the 20th century. A French car manufacturer founded in 1954 that produced large, imposing saloon cars powered by monstrous V8 engines from the likes of Chrysler and Chevrolet. Quite how these didn’t become more popular we’ll never know.

These creations were oozing with class and luxury, with bold styling and lavish interiors. You’d expect a far less intrusive engine to sit under the bonnet and yet a twitch of the right foot would awaken the monster within.

Among a class of sublime examples will be the Facel Vega HK500, with its monstrous Chrysler V8 lurking beneath irresistible bodywork.

Sweet’N Low - Invicta’s Invincible S-Type

The Carlier Lawn will feature two centenary celebrations in 2025, as Goodwood also marks the anniversary of Invicta with a class of rare and hugely desirable S-types.

Invicta came to prominence during the late 1920s and early ‘30s, and is perhaps best remembered for the S-type, its low-slung sportscar powered by a 4.5-litre six-cylinder Meadows engine.

Total production numbers for the S-type are estimated at around 75, and the Festival of Speed will play host to many of the most exquisite, with ‘low-chassis’ models featuring coachwork by a number of venerable names, the likes of Vanden Plas and Corsica.

Van Go - Masters of the Moving Arts

But it’s not all about opulent coachwork and legendary performance; the Cartier Lawn will also appreciate ground-breaking innovation in 2025, on the 60th anniversary of the Ford Transit.

To mark the occasion, the original white van, produced in 1965, will be showcased in all its glory at the Festival of Speed, surrounded by a host of its logistics contemporaries.

Curve Appeal - The Golden Age of Carrozzeria Touring

Carrozzeria Touring Superleggera was a coachbuilding company founded in Milan in 1926 that, during its original 40-year production run, composed a scarcely believable portfolio of stunning machinery.

A long list of iconic and beautiful cars from Alfa Romeo, Isotta Fraschini, Ferrari, Maserati, Lamborghini and Aston Martin were all imbued with the mesmeric touch of Touring Superleggera, and many of the company’s greatest creations will congregate on the Cartier Lawn in 2025.

Expect to ogle a collection that includes striking examples of the Aston Martin DB4 and the Lamborghini 350GT among a host of gorgeous 1950s and ‘60s sportscars.

Spoilers, Spokes & Stripes - 60 years of Alpina

And finally, we have the Cartier Lawn’s 60th anniversary celebration of Alpina, one of the great German manufacturers with a history intertwined with BMW. Although now a subsidiary of BMW, Alpina was until 2022 recognised as a manufacturer in its own right, and spent the best part of 60 years developing bespoke iterations of BMW machinery with a distinct performance edge.

This year's Festival of Speed will host a mouth-watering collection of some of Alpina’s most remarkable creations. This class within the Cartier Style et Luxe will commemorate the golden Alpina years, with a selection of cars from the 1970s and ‘80s that helped to define the marque as a global icon.

All of the classic Alpina motifs will be on display on the Lawn, everything from the famous pinstripes to the 20-spoke wheels and audacious aerodynamic addendums.

Fans of this marque will enjoy exploring the delights of the E24 B7 Turbo, but perhaps of highest intrigue will be a B12 5.7 Coupé, the original production model to be exact, and the one that featured in all of the car’s press material.

It’s a stellar line up for the 2025 Cartier Style et Luxe. There’s truly something for everyone here, which is exactly what we love about this quaint little lawn tucked away in the corner of the Festival of Speed. Be sure to make time in your day to take a closer look if you’re lucky enough to be in attendance, we will certainly be taking the opportunity to revel in many of automotive history’s most iconic machinery.

The 2025 Festival of Speed takes place on 10th-13th July. While admission tickets have now sold out, you can still join us with our range of hospitality experiences that are still available.
